Calculating percentages in Excel is a versatile task that can be used for various purposes, such as finding percentages of values, like: How do you take 20% off sales in Excel? , How do I get a 25% off promotion? and more?

In this article, we will learn how to calculate percentage increases or decreases in values. How do you calculate the reseller commission rate, income tax percentage, or interest rate?  To calculate percentages in Excel, you can use a few different methods depending on what you want to achieve.

Basic Percentage Formula In Excel:

A percentage is fundamentally a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. To calculate a percentage, you divide a number by 100 and then multiply by the desired percentage.

For example: Your total this month's sales is 10,000. then you have a 25% commission for distribution. Now you have an available balance of 75%

25% means here 25 out of every 100 parts. Look at the formula below

=10000/100*25

 The formula will calculate a 25% percentage of 10,000. 

This is how you normally calculate percentages. Now we will do that with cell

Example:

  • Cell D2: Part value (e.g., 100)
  • Cell C2: Total value (e.g., 10000)

=C2/100*25

 
Calculate Marks Percentages In Excel  

To calculate marks percentages in Excel, follow these steps. Let’s assume you have student marks and total possible marks, and you want to calculate the percentage of marks scored by each student.

For example: Imagine you scored 550 out of 600 Total Numbers. Now, You want to find out the percentage of the Total Number

To add the Marks Scored in your sheet, we will use the SUM function

Calculate Percentage
In Column F, we will calculate the percentage of marks scored. simply add the following formula

=D2/E2

 

This formula divides the marks scored (D2) by the total marks (E2). After pressing enter you will get a number with decimal places showing

Convert a Decimal to Percentage 

Simply select the cell (F2) and go to the

  • Home tab, click on the Percentage Style button (%) from the Number group.

 This will automatically convert the decimal to a percentage format. 

Apply Another Way

  • Select the Cell: Click on the cell containing the decimal value (e.g., F2).
  • Right-click on the mouse and Format Cells:
    • Choose "Format Cells" from the context menu.
  • Format Cells Dialog:
    • In the Format Cells dialog box, go to the Number tab.
    • Select "Percentage" from the list on the left.
    • Specify the number of decimal places if needed (usually 2 decimal places are standard).
    • Click "OK".
